Rustic Coastal Decorating

Continuing on our rustic theme, I found these great beach house images and decorating ideas from our friends at Coastal Living.  The slideshow, found here, highlights a few beautifully decorated coastal rooms, and offers some great advice for accenting your home.

Rustic Kitchen from Coastal Living

I love the faded look of the wood the cabinets are made of, apparently it has been pickled.  They describe the room as a “rustic oasis”, and offer some good advice for decorating with this rustic coastal theme:

“Pickled wood covers all of the kitchen surfaces. When searching for reclaimed items, don’t feel constrained by their original purpose. Here, an old brass curtain rod is given a new life as a towel bar.”

I think it looks great, and I love the antique glass bottles at the top of the window above the sink, they look great when the light comes through.

This next picture shows how you can use uniquely designed rustic rooms to your advantage.  The stairs create some odd angles for the room, but it has skillfully been transformed into a beautiful reading area and library.  The image is titled ‘Nestled Nook’, which fits it perfectly, as this coastal room invites you in to sit down and read a good book.

Here is their description of the room:

“Small nooks, such as the lounge area and library, make the most of tricky angles in the attic-like master bedroom. Found objects displayed throughout the room give a sense of history to the room. Instead of framing artwork, prop it against walls or shelving for a relaxed point of interest.”

I agree and think the painting leaning against the wall under the stairs looks great just the way it is.  Throughout the slideshow they discuss how choosing the right unique, or ‘unexpected’ decorations, can make a huge difference in the look and feel of a room.

The image on the right is titled ‘Accessorized Style’ and highlights this concept of adding ‘unexpected’ objects to a room.  As they say in their description, ‘Never underestimate the power of accessorizing’.

Rustic Accessorizing – Coastal Living

“Never underestimate the power of accessorizing. Add one or two unexpected objects, such as the French wood scrollwork on the coffee table and the large shell-encrusted pillow with heavy embroidery. Pile on your favorite trinkets, and then edit, making sure to vary height, size, and scale.”

The rustic coastal decorations seen below are hand made metal sculptures by coastal artist Chase Allen.  The iron fish sculptures hang easily on any wall inside your favorite friend’s beach house or beach cottage.  Iron Fish art is the perfect addition to your rustic, coastal themed room.

Rustic Decorations

Spring is here, and over at Garden and Gun they have a great slideshow of some ‘new’ rustic gardening tools and decorations.  This wheelbarrow fits into both categories as it is completely functional, and also has a cool rustic finish that looks great.

While it looks great as a decoration, it would be hard for me not to use it, or ‘put it to work’, as their description states:

“The rustic patina of this vintage mid-century pushcart from Terrain—once used at London’s Chelsea Flower Market—makes it a stylish alternative to the traditional wheelbarrow. Put it to work, or stash it on the porch as a chic display for seasonal blooms ($1,400; 610-459-2400).”

This garden tool set also has a great vintage quality and rustic appeal that looks incredible.

These tools are hand crafted and are made from bronze, which is lighter and actually improves your soil, as they say, “These handsome garden tools from PKS aren’t just for looks. Handcrafted from hardworking bronze, they are also lighter than many iron or steel versions and naturally rustproof, and they improve soil quality to boot (clockwise from top left: shovel, $198; short-handled hoe, $69; long-handled hoe, $96; rake, $118; weeder, $44; harleyfarms.com). Tie on this embroidered linen apron by Coral & Tusk to keep dirt off of clean duds. The fabric gets softer with wear ($90; coral
