Rustic Coastal Decorating

Continuing on our rustic theme, I found these great beach house images and decorating ideas from our friends at Coastal Living.  The slideshow, found here, highlights a few beautifully decorated coastal rooms, and offers some great advice for accenting your home.

Rustic Kitchen from Coastal Living

I love the faded look of the wood the cabinets are made of, apparently it has been pickled.  They describe the room as a “rustic oasis”, and offer some good advice for decorating with this rustic coastal theme:

“Pickled wood covers all of the kitchen surfaces. When searching for reclaimed items, don’t feel constrained by their original purpose. Here, an old brass curtain rod is given a new life as a towel bar.”

I think it looks great, and I love the antique glass bottles at the top of the window above the sink, they look great when the light comes through.

This next picture shows how you can use uniquely designed rustic rooms to your advantage.  The stairs create some odd angles for the room, but it has skillfully been transformed into a beautiful reading area and library.  The image is titled ‘Nestled Nook’, which fits it perfectly, as this coastal room invites you in to sit down and read a good book.

Rustic Decorating – Coastal Living

Here is their description of the room:

“Small nooks, such as the lounge area and library, make the most of tricky angles in the attic-like master bedroom. Found objects displayed throughout the room give a sense of history to the room. Instead of framing artwork, prop it against walls or shelving for a relaxed point of interest.”

I agree and think the painting leaning against the wall under the stairs looks great just the way it is.  Throughout the slideshow they discuss how choosing the right unique, or ‘unexpected’ decorations, can make a huge difference in the look and feel of a room.

The image on the right is titled ‘Accessorized Style’ and highlights this concept of adding ‘unexpected’ objects to a room.  As they say in their description, ‘Never underestimate the power of accessorizing’.

Rustic Accessorizing – Coastal Living

“Never underestimate the power of accessorizing. Add one or two unexpected objects, such as the French wood scrollwork on the coffee table and the large shell-encrusted pillow with heavy embroidery. Pile on your favorite trinkets, and then edit, making sure to vary height, size, and scale.”

The rustic coastal decorations seen below are hand made metal sculptures by coastal artist Chase Allen.  The iron fish sculptures hang easily on any wall inside your favorite friend’s beach house or beach cottage.  Iron Fish art is the perfect addition to your rustic, coastal themed room.

Daufuskie Island-A Dog Friendly Beach

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Daufuskie Island offers one of the most beautiful and remote dog friendly beaches on the east coast.  Here, you will not have to worry about your four legged friend bothering hundreds of people at any given walk.  If you have never reached this sparse island situated between Savannah, GA and Hilton Head, SC, you would be shocked to find such an under-utalized beach where your dog could no doubt run free all hours of the day.  On an average busy Summer day, Daufuskie’s 3 mile long beach probably gets about 100 visitors.  Come visit a perfect coastal destination in the low country.  Your dog will love you for it.  Try http://www.daufuskieislandrentals.com/ for rental information and be sure to ask about pet friendly rental options.

Design Editor, Steele Marcoux gives tips on decorating with cool whites in Coastal Living

1.  Paint walls, ceilings, trim, and doors the same shade of white to create a uniform backdrop. Surfaces painted one color blend seamlessly, allowing natural wood floors or furnishings to steal the show.

2.  Give monochromatic rooms interest and depth with texture. Go for the look of an old beach shack by coating wooden walls in white. Once dry, sand planks to reveal glimpses of the wood beneath.

3.  This simple, sun-bleached palette produces a clean, airy atmosphere, allowing dramatic views or artwork to take center stage.

4.  Don’t overlook what lies below. White floors do show scratches and dirt, but their brilliant sheen is unmatched. Porch and floor enamel can be tinted and will protect against heavy foot traffic.

5.  Build around one soothing white, then add colorful accents. Choose paints with tints of blue, gray, or pink to prevent rooms from looking washed out.

6.  Pair soft upholstery and white walls with dark wood floors for richness and warmth. You can achieve the same effect on a smaller scale with wood tables or even baskets.

7.  Install white beaded board and retro appliances to create classic cottage style in the kitchen. Oil-rubbed hardware provides dramatic contrast.–note lobster decor by sink

8.  Consider white walls your easel. Art assumes greater prominence when placed in a white interior. Gallery owners have long displayed artwork against white walls for maximum effect.

9.  A simple arrangement of greenery becomes sculptural when set against bright white interiors. Remember, less is more: A few carefully chosen accessories with large proportions will make an instant impression.

marshside mama's new website

Congrats to Beth Shipman for finally getting Marshide Mama’s a website.  This is long over due.  I encourage everyone to check out the new site and also check out the music she has booked for this spring/summer.  One man band Ben Prestage returns to the island after first playing here with blues legend Eddie Kirkland at least 2+ years ago.  Ben is high energy and a must see.

Vintage finish defines coastal decor from the past-Lucy Welch-Allen Nautical Design Opinion

Collectors of vintage/weathered coastal iron works can enjoy all Iron Fish, mermaid, and crab sculptures as they are finished with these relics of the past in mind.  What mother nature creates out of painted metal after time and elements play their part is what The Iron Fish strives to achieve when finishing all hand crafted coastal sculptures.   Let it bleed!  Most people don’t give rust enough credit for adding character to metal art objects that have been long exposed to the elements.  Appreciation for that beautiful rust is easily found in anything Chase Allen creates.  Like wine and coastal living, these coastal gifts/nautical gifts improve with age.
