blue crab sculpture-coastal gift idea
Many of us are fortunate enough to have or know someone who has a beach house. The beauty behind knowing someone is that often we get use of that house. If we own the home, we get lots of guests but that is not what I want to focus on in this blog.
A bottle of wine or a food basket as a “thank you” gift is a nice gesture but is quite temporary if you think about it. Next time you want to give a coastal gift to someone, consider hand crafted art as a far more thoughtful, permanent, and classy option. If you really hit a home run and the recipients love your nautical gift, perhaps the next time they take a look at their vintage “Iron Fish” wall art they will think, “you know, we ought to have them back for another visit”. Come on, let’s be honest, isn’t that the goal of giving a gift of appreciation anyways? (Smiley face here) Remember, an invite is great. A second invite is better. Give a gift that lasts! Also, don’t forget that The Iron Fish sculptures can also come gift wrapped. See this link: GIFT WRAP for more information. Gift wrapping options do not apply to medium or large iron mermaid sculptures.

Collectors of vintage/weathered coastal iron works can enjoy all Iron Fish, mermaid, and crab designs as they are finished with these relics of the past in mind. What mother nature creates out of painted metal after time and elements play their part is what The Iron Fish strives to achieve when finishing all hand crafted coastal sculptures. Let it bleed! Most people don’t give rust enough credit for adding character to metal objects that have been long exposed to the elements. Appreciation for that beautiful rust is easily found in anything Chase Allen creates. Like wine, these coastal gifts/nautical gifts improve with age.

stingray coastal decor sculptures
One of the true wonders of wall art..in any form ..is that it can be placed or hung on a blank wall and have the ability to stand entirely on its own, without benefit of props or furnishings. (Walk through any gallery or museum and you’ll see what I mean.) Furniture, on the other hand, cannot! Invariably, it looks incomplete without some kind of accessorizing. (Say a mermaid sculpture or an iron fish for instance. ha!)
CASE IN POINT:
If you have an exterior door opposite your dining rooms entry, try hanging an iron fish sculpture on both sides of that door for a bit of a wow factor. (both, hung facing the door and approx. a foot and a half away from the casing.)
Or, hang a medium size pair of the metal fish (stacked) on one side of the door and the smallest size fish sculpture on the other.

mermaid sculptures-mermaid art-coastal decor-nautical decor
Whether I’m eating them…or hanging them on a wall, I positively adore fish in any form. Fortunately, Chase (and his site’s past and present ‘aquatic’ design selections ) offer an immense variety of decorating opportunities for the home, office, business or as a hand-crafted gift for someone extra important to you. (The fact that these vintage finished sculptures are hand-crafted by a Daufuskie Island artisan make it all the more special.) The fact that I can offer design tips as to how these sculptures can be integrated into your own interior decorating choices is icing on the cake! Though many of my tips are, for the most part, straight forward….I do enjoy taking a more ’tongue in cheek’ or ‘outside the box’ approach as often as I possibly can! It’s certainly more fun and adventurous, so let your hair down for a bit and give it try. You might discover a whole other side to yourself.

1. Make a big and bold first impression on your guests by ’stacking’ a grouping of iron fish sculptures on the wall directly across from your entry door. The individual colors of each of the fish are doubly enhanced by the vintage-finish. Thus..your statement piece. (more…)

Renowned Charlotte Architect Lindsay Daniel Gives Iron Fish Tips
I do not use these fish sculptures for just coastal décor. Iron Fish Art has well crafted Objects d’art that I can use in any of my traditional or contemporary architecture (home, office, or retail establishments). The simplicity and classic lines of Chases’ sculptures creates the timelessness that each piece holds and opens their application to many interior styles and uses.
Besides the typical application as wall art, singular or in groupings, I am using them as light fixtures (backlit) in hallways and other accent lighting areas. The love of iron work on light fixtures has endured for centuries and blends well with soft and strong color palettes as well as construction textures. The potential is endless!

mermaid and fish sculptures school
Mermaid, Big and Small
Traditional entrance hall meets non-traditional placement of a 7 ft. mermaid sculpture “rising from the sea’ directly opposite the front entry door. (Dynamic first impression….with the promise of greater things yet to come).
Turn your traditional foyer into a coastal art gallery blending an interesting mix of traditional with folk art, contemporary with vintage, coastal decor accents with post modernistic touches. It matters not because the sky’s the limit! The overall effect created by having something like an heirloom family portrait juxtaposed to a ’school’ of assorted fish sculptures or a swimming mermaid is an exciting departure from ‘the expected’!
Any stairway will be enhanced by the addition of one of the mermaid sculptures shining in all of her ‘coastal glory’.
On a traditional stairwell she could present on the wall at the very top of the stairs.
On a stairwell’s landing, the 7 ft mermaid will not only give some much needed attention to a seldom used space, but will absorb some of the vastness and height the area presents. (more…)

school of fish turned to coastal decor
A fun decorating tip for those of you lucky enough to already enjoy cottage living, try introducing some subtle coastal accents to your decor with the addition of some hand crafted sculptures made by your favorite folk artisan.
(1)As a wonderful ‘tongue in cheek’ way to diffuse lighting glare, utilize random fish sculptures as wall sconces. Where? Anywhere there is a need. Sky’s the limit! The iron fish sculptures would be fantastic in the kitchen or breakfast room.
(2) I’d love to see the mermaid sculpture ’swimming’ gracefully up a staircase wall or ‘diving’ down that same staircase for that matter. This is coastal decor in it’s most classic and vintage form.

fish sculptures-coastal decor-coastal art-nautical art-nautical decor-fish art-hand crafted
NAUTICAL ART-COASTAL ART–Before I begin to show you how anything on this website can be integrated into your home in a variety of ways, a few important things that you should always bear in mind about home decorating:
Always remember that you are not married to any one design element when choosing your home’s decor.
Regardless of what your design “roots” are or what design your home’s exterior is….a healthy mix of styles, furnishings and visual ‘textures’ is not only permissible, but preferable. (Chase Allen’s nautical designs and iron sculptures are great forms of texture and outside of the box decor) The saying “variety is the spice of life” is spot on when it comes to creating a style within your home that speaks to warmth and comfort as well as beauty.
