Daufuskie Island Off Shore Fishing With Captain Jason Dubose

cobia fishing with jason dubose

cobia fishing with jason dubose

Continuing education for my craft is to get outdoors and go fishing.  The other day, I got a super treat of a fishing trip.  Captain Jason Dubose out of Oldfield Plantation took a few of us Daufuskie misfits 20+ miles offshore to the Betsy Ross reef  for a full day of fishing.  This time of year is famous for Cobia fishing and that is exactly what we did.  My experiences fishing are mostly inshore so when I am on a boat, my knowledge of fishing needs improvement.  Here enters the pro, Jason.

Captain Dubose had us on fish all day.  We brought about 10 cobia to the boat and also hooked up to an Amberjack, two large Red Fish,  and a nice sized Barracuda.  We hooked a monster that I fought for about 25 minutes before it got bored and broke the line.  Jason’s best guess was that we had a large shark on the hook.  Well, we will never know for sure.

To keep this blog short, I want to simply say that if you are visiting Hilton Head, Bluffton, Beaufort, or Daufuskie and want to go offshore fishing, I highly recommend Jason Dubose.  His knowledge of the waters made the trip informative and he never showed frustration when we let the big ones go due to lack of experience.  For a day of fishing, I would have to score it a solid ten on a ten point scale.

Daufuskie Island Conservancy’s Sustainable Farm Update

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

OK, now the goat barn is 99% finished with “Goat Barn” sign in place.  Looks great and the goats are feeling right at home.  Both are pregnant and after the baby’s are born, goats milk will be abundant.  Please call Pat Beichler to volunteer at the farm.  Goat milking hands are needed!  :-)   Many thanks to all of the volunteers for their hard work in completing the new barn.  Next up, the “Poulet Chalet” aka “chicken house” which is 70% complete.

In this brief blog, I would like to simply cast the following message, as a simple attempt to try and save time and spare anguish for so many fellow islanders:

Ask questions and do your own research before you get all worked up.  Now kiss and make up.

2009 Volunteers In Medicine Christmas Ornaments are here!!!!

The Iron Fish Studio is proud to announce that our 4th annual Volunteers in Medicine Christmas tree ornaments hand decorated by the Daufuskie Island Elementary children are ready for purchase.  This year we made 300 uniquely designed ornaments that sell for $10 per ornament.  This is a suggested price and 100% of all ornament sales go directly to VIM which is an organization that offers free health care to residents of Hilton Head and Daufuskie Island who are not insured and who also meets financial qualifications.

Every year, VIM handles 31,000 patient visits served by approximately 700 volunteers!  The cleaning of VIM, which would cost $25,000 is donated by grateful patients doing their best to give back.  One last important statistic is that 70% of the patients are employed and 20% are children not old enough to work.
